Native American Stylistic Analysis Two writers will never have the same writing techniques or style. They will always be unique and shaped in different ways. The two Native American writers, N.S. Momaday and D. Brown, use diction, syntax, imagery, and tone differently to describe two similar, but completely different landscapes. Diction can be thought to be the most useful and powerful tool in writing. It can completely alter the meaning and context of any work. Both writers were able to incorporate this in their writings, but Momday had the most profound use. He used detailed, yet simple words that lay people could understand and properly convey the full meaning. Brown used this similar technique as well, only a different outcome. His passage contained little detail which reduced the momentum of the landscape substantially. This allows the reader to see the image and get a mental picture to understand the writings further. The use of detail in Momday’s passage does just that. The readers are able to see the landscape in great detail allowing the reader to cultivate a sense of knowing. In Brown’s piece, the exact opposite is performed. Lack of detail does not allow the reader to picture the landscape therefore decreasing the meaning. The overall reaction is achieved through syntax. Long flowing sentences allow the reader to calm down and really soak in the information they’re being given. Telegraphic, choppy sentences make for harsh tones and reader begins to lose interest and receive negative reactions from the text. With this being said, Brown incorporated the use of short and choppy sentences, which adds to my point again, he gives the audience a sense of nothingness and meaninglessness.
