Patients with colostomy disease have suffered some form of surgery done through the colon (large intestine) known as stoma colostomy. Colostomy is created when a portion of the colon or the rectum is removed, and the remaining colon is brought to the abdominal wall. The opening, is then attached to stoma appliance, provides an alternative channel for feces to leave the body. It may be reversible or irreversible depending on the circumstances of the patient (Clinic. 1998). It also may be defined by the portion of the colon involving gastrointestinal and genitourinary. Many patients suffering from this disease have a permanent colostomy given a colostomy bag for waste change. This disability can lead to mental health and depression to patients.
