Colonial Development – Important of Shipping and Trade Throughout the colonial period, commerce was an indispensable part in promoting the economy of each nation. Especially the colonies, the provision of their commerce to their mother nations were extremely significant. They were main source that brought an enormous benefit to the mother nation. For that reason, developing the colonies was the first priority policy that mother nations chose to focus on. The more the colonies developed the more benefit the mother nations obtained. Trading and shipping were an important way to the development of the colonies. Since the shipbuilding industry appeared, it opened a new commercial trade way to the New World. It helped the exchange between nations and the colonies convenient and easier, Shipping was one of the fields considered as a key to develop the colonies. It had many profits to the colonies. The first profit it brought was money earned in the sale of ships. For example, by 1700, the New England fleet exceeded 2,000 exclusive of fishing boats.…show more content…
When a colony was founded, it was an original colony. So it had very fertile land, suitable for growing crops. For instance, tobacco was grown in some of the colonies like Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia in order to provide a good substitute for Spanish tobacco. Or the colonies got the profits from rice and indigo… But there has a big problem, natural resources were plentiful, but labor, especially skilled labors were scarce.
