A Legendary Fashion Icon What made Coco Chanel become famous and change the world? How did she create innovative fashion designs at a young age? Coco Chanel had a harsh childhood in the 19th Century since her father ran away when she was a young girl, and her mother died when Chanel was still a child. Having a harsh childhood, she was peculiar when she was compared to other children her age and was sent to a convent where Chanel learned to sew. Her sister gave her a hard time and was not kind to her when she returned home. To calm herself down, Coco Chanel sewed little articles of clothing. When her boyfriend, Boy, passed away because of an incident, Chanel refused to go to his funeral and instead requested to go to the spot of the incident. At this point in her life, Chanel was greatly influenced by the color black. She said that wearing black was a symbol of strength, freedom, and the color of mourning with a touch of chic. That led her to design a dress that she would wear, which was the Little Black Dress. Creating a new style and design enticed and interested more people to her new dress. The new dress was made out of a smooth black crêpe with long narrow sleeves. Soon enough, she made enough to sell in stores. Jessa Krick states how impactful the little black dress was. “American Vogue likened Chanel’s ‘little black dress’ to the Ford, alluding to its almost universal popularity as a fashion basic” (Krick). Coco Chanel called herself a little dressmaker. She thought that other people did not understand how women were and made them look like freaks. Her original designs and color palette attracted more people to her and made them eager to see and buy new articles of clothing.
