Amy Heckerling challenges the social hierarchy of the 20th century and how an individual’s identity could be shaped by the increasing prevalence of consumerism and materialism. The presence of a social hierarchy was ubiquitous in 1990’s America, as people adhered to strict unwritten rules about their status.
