A relationship is a connection between you and another person. Characteristics are special features, qualities, and feelings. In the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, Jonas’s character is revealed through his relationship with his father. Throughout the story, Jonas changes and shows many characteristics such as sadness, compassion, and bravery. In the beginning of the book, Jonas thought the community was always right, always knew what was best. He believed they knew how to handle all of life and the problems they faced. Jonas believed “that the Chief Elder makes no mistakes. Especially not at the Ceremony of Twelve” (72). “‘He killed it! My father killed it!’ Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing. He continued to stare at the screen numbly.” (188) Jonas finally realizes, by watching his father, what really goes on inside the community. Based off of this, Jonas also wonders what else could be going on inside the community, making him question whether the community is always right. “‘After we eat, we will make a plan.’” (192). The Giver tells Jonas that they need to make a plan to change the community. He wants them to know, especially his father, that what they are doing is wrong. “‘They know nothing.’” (132) Everyone in the community, except Jonas and the Giver, don’t know about emotions, colors, feelings, and the past. Exposing this information would help Jonas’ father realize many new things, and being able to have life experiences and memories. “‘But he lied to me!’ Jonas wept.” (191). Jonas cries over the fact that his own father lied to him about his job. This make Jonas question what else he has been lied to about. He doesn’t trust his father anymore, and feels like he knows nothing about him.
