Title “The crowd fell silent; only could be heard the voices of the gamblers vainly offering two to one. Everybody acknowledged Buck a magnificent animal, but twenty fifty-pound sacks of flour bulked too large in their eyes for them to loosen their pouch-strings.” Thornton glanced at Buck in a fluster, Buck is examining him wondering what he is thinking. “I hope I didn’t spend my money for nothing, Buck, I hope I didn’t,” proclaims Thornton. Buck gleans O’Brien and Thornton talk. Thornton was cursing, in addition to O’Brien seemed very serene. As Buck starts hauling the sled, his legs begin to teeter; he is feeling unconscious.
