Hockey is one of the biggest sports in the world, and the biggest sport in Canada. Because of its popularity, vast research and technology have been implemented in order to make the sport more competitive, while also taking into account player safety. The hockey stick breaking point test is important in defining the sticks flex, strength, durability, as well as locating its breaking point.
Two of our competitors are the Industrial Technology Center, and Reebok / CCM. The industrial technology center is a Canadian company based in Manitoba. It is a special operating agency of the province of Manitoba. Their customers include industry, entrepreneurs, and governments. Reebok/CCM is one of the biggest sports manufacturers in North America. Reebok bought out CCM in 2004. CCM became reebok – CCM hockey in 2007.…show more content… They use this test to try to understand how the equipment works (I.e. how it absorbs forces, and generates energy to the puck). The test is also used because the piston putting pressure on the stick mimics the hand putting the force on the shaft to shoot the puck. The test takes two variables into account: both the force applied on the hockey stick, as well as its displacement, while controlling all of the variables that can affect testing, or results (temperature, atmosphere pressure, humidity, etc.) A load cell is used to measure the force on the stick, and a string gauge measures how much the stick bends in inches. The breaking point is tested by using a hydraulic press to slowly increased pressure on a stick until it breaks.
