The reason books failed was because people didn’t want nor need books anymore. Without the books, the entire, massive population would be happier. The goal was to make mankind happy and equal. Every man was to be “made equal” by the Constitution (58). Not only that, without books, there are no intellectuals or wise man to strike other men down with knowledge. Another focus was the appeasement of minority groups. The world is so cluttered that somebody takes offense to something. Captain Beatty states that there are all of these minorities with “their navels to be kept clean” (57). Technology played a crucial role in the shaping of a society of brainless inhabitants.
