The National Cancer Institute estimates that over 10 million individuals are alive today who have been previously diagnosed with cancer. Largely as a result of increased screening programs for breast, cervical, and prostate cancers and advances in treatment, the numbers of cancer survivors has tripled over the past 37 years. Cancer survivorship refers to a distinct phase of cancer care that follows primary treatment for cancer and lasts until cancer recurrence or end of life. Although individuals vary and there are many types of cancers and treatments, the acute, long-term, and late effects of cancer and its treatment may have multiple physical and psychosocial consequences.
