I have never counted country among my favorite music genres. However, I do enjoy some older, more classic country music artists: Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson, for example. Despite my appreciation for some parts of the genre, it is modern “bro country” that I find most intolerable out of everything in country music and beyond. I generally find it to be annoying, overly simple, and even sexist. However, I am curious what value artists and fans see in bro country music. I’m also curious to whether research into the subgenre will confirm or debunk my biases towards it. Developing biases towards certain genres and/or cultures is universal.
