I read “The Giver” by Lois Lowery for this book report. The front cover of the book shows an old man with a corner of the book showing woods. It is very creepy and intrigues you to find out what the story is about. The book is science fiction. The main character in the story is Jonas who lives in a community with very strict rules and guidelines. In this community every year a ceremony is held that dictates all the changes in their lives. In this ceremony families are assigned mates, children and jobs. At the age of twelve members of the community are given their life job assignments. Jonas is given the important and special job assignment as the receiver of memories in which there is only one in the community. Along with this job he is given instructions that include the ability to lie, ask rude questions and not share his dreams which are against the rules he has had growing up.…show more content…
He is trained to receive memories from the past some which are very painful and include war and being hungry and more. He learns that in order to protect the community from these memories he must take them on for if he doesn’t everyone will get them and not know how to handle them. During his training he learns what being “released” means. It means being killed. He watches his dad murder a new baby just because he is a twin and twins aren’t allowed in the community. He realizes that the community was made to be sameness or without colors and with all these rules to avoid past problems with their strict rules, family assignments, and releasing of the old at a certain age and newborns who don’t
