Barefoot Heart was written by Elva Hart Trevino. The book was an actual autobiography of her life from the age of three all the way to her college years. It starts off at her childhood as the daughter of Mexican immigrants who worked as migrant workers. She was the youngest of six children, and the only way for her parents to support the huge family in that time was to work the fields. She was only three years old when her father heard of work needed in Minnesota, in 1953. They lived in Texas at the time and made the trip in a family friend’s truck all the way up there. They arrived at a migrant camp to work in the fields, hoeing beets among other things, in the blazing heat. When they arrived they found out that in order to comply with the child labor law they had to leave Elva and her sister Diamantia who was only 11 years old at the time at local Catholic school, ran by nuns. They spent the whole summer there separated from their family. Elva struggled constantly with loneliness, which is easy to imagine considering her young age. She still was not old enough to work, so she brought them water whenever she was signaled to do so. When the entire family played a part in the backbreaking field labor, they were driven ruthlessly by their father “Apa”. He was determined to earn enough money to not only get his family the bare minimal, but also to allow all his children to graduate from high school. Apa carried out his goal and through hard work and dedication was able to save $2000. The money was used to get Elva into college. That was the first step that eventually led to her earning a master's degree in computer
