Aurora’s group got 13, as the answer for the long expression. At the beginning I looked at the first expression, and made it a simpler problem by doing the problem in the parenthesis first. I saw that H could not be the exponent because if it were, the number would be way to big. If it were multiplication it would also be too large. If it were to division it would be a decimal. If it were subtraction it would be a negative number, also if it were division it would be a negative number. The only thing left is addition, so now we know that H=Addition. Now that I know H=addition, I added 5 and 40 together to make 45, since 5 and 40 where in the parenthesis I did it first. The second part of the equation was (45) S 3=15. Since I knew that 45 divided by 3 was 15, I knew that S had to be division.…show more content…
So I crossed out the star and wrote a division sign above it, to show that star means division. Then I solved the part, that had division in it. After I solved the division part of the problem I started working backwards. The reason I decided to work backwards was because, I knew that to get 4 as your final answer you could either multiply the 2 by 2, divide the 2 by 8, or do 22. Since I knew that I needed to get 2, or 8 as the answer inside the parenthesis, I tried to do 14 divided by 2 which is 7 and then 7+5 = 8. Since 8 isn’t the final answer I tried 7 - 5 which equals 2. So R =
