Attending Murry Bergtraum High School was my first experience in the public school system. It was a largely diverse school which specialized in Business. Though born in the US, I am very comfortable communicating in our native dialect and preferred to do so, especially in my younger years. For this reason, peers as well as teachers in error referred to me as being a foreigner or immigrant. I can remember being teased in school because of the difference in the way I spoke. It seemed as though they presumed that every black person with a Caribbean accent was from Jamaica, West Indies.
