I chose number three for my project, the book “Soldier’s Heart” assignment. Army life is not at all what Charley expected it to be supposed to be, at the time he was only 15 when you were supposed to be 18 or older. He thought that he known what happened in the war, but he really didn’t know until he got there. Charley thought the war was something he had to do, to be considered a real man and that “the only shooting war to come in a man’s life and if a man didn’t step right along he’d miss the whole thing”. He also liked to know that all the ladies in town would like and drool over him when he was in the parade for being in a “shooting war”. In Maryland, Charley saw his first colored people. Bull run was his first battle, while he was fighting he thought “Make it stop now!”. Until he realized he was screaming, “Make it all stop now!”. At first, the things Charley saw were things he never wanted to see. He realized then that he was in more danger than he has ever been. Everything that Charley learned from practicing went out of his mind he didn’t know what to do next. After that battle for the day had ended, Charley was out sitting by a tree and thought he saw fireflies but then realized they were people hunting for their friends or loved ones with their lanterns. The next day Charley then realized that he couldn’t get close to the people he was with fighting, after having to leave a friend behind to die alone from a shot to the chest when trying to run the rebs out. Charley kept writing his mother at home that kept telling him to come home and leave before he was left to die too. At the battle of Gettysburg, Charley knew it was “the worse battle but it could've been worse.” “The rebel unit stormed up the hill like they were one whole person.
