People often consider which is better for transportation: the train or the automobile. When deciding which is better they need to consider all the factors. Trains are primarily used to transport people over long distances. Cars are used to transport people over both short and long distances. Both are used to transport people, but trains do so more efficiently. Trains can hold more people but do not provide the accuracy that cars do. When comparing the two it is important to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each mode of transportation. Trains are very efficient and allow large numbers of people to be transported at once. In an article, Sarah Schlichter wrote, “Trains are more energy efficient per passenger mile than planes or cars”. Trains average about four hundred miles per gallon and can hold up to one hundred and fifty people per car. On the other hand, cars can average thirty-four miles per gallon and can hold a maximum of five people. Overall this makes trains more fuel efficient than cars. Cars limit the number of people that can be transported and have a low fuel economy per person compared to trains.
