Is NASA Worth It? If we dared to imagine if the National Aeronautics and Space Administration never existed life as we know it would be very different. Throughout the years NASA has developed products for space travel that has found uses outside of the aerospace industry. Common items such as memory foam, LED lights and even the rubber used to make tires last longer wouldn’t have been discovered without NASA. They might not be able to keep making discoveries like these because of their slim budget. Since the year 2000 NASA’s budget has decreased almost 10% and their budget is less than .5% of the total federal budget for the year (Rogers). It is almost like we are short changing ourselves by short changing the NASA budget. A proven valuable program like this is long overdue for an increase of federal funding.…show more content…
NASA has been active for over 50 years. In that amount of time they have helped invent almost 2000 “spinoff” products (Turner). These are technologies that were developed for space travel that are now used outside of the space program. These technologies are used in our homes, cars, work places, and doctors’ offices. Things like LED lights now make our homes more efficient, more durable rubbers let our car tires last longer and advanced prosthetics let amputees live a more normal life. Pretty much anywhere we go we come into contact with some technology that was developed because of NASA. Why would we want to limit the possibility of more technologies like these? It just seems like we are shortchanging ourselves by shortchanging the NASA
