Life is everywhere on our planet but what does it actually mean to be alive? In order to be classed as alive you must have all of the seven characteristics that are essential for life. These characteristics are movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition. I will be looking at the Arctic Wolf and will attempt to explain each characteristic and look at why each one is essential for sustaining life. The Arctic wolf has strong legs and paws to help it survive the cold environment. Their muscular and skeletal systems are used for them to run around in their territory. The wolf’s paws have four toes on each pad with thick stiff hairs to act as protection and provide better grip when running the earth as well as the slippery ice surface. The wolf’s body is built for stamina. Their narrow chests, powerful backs and long legs allow them to reach a speed of 65km per hour during a chase. These traits are essential for making movement easier in the continuous snowy conditions in Alaska. Like a human the wolf uses its respiratory system to breathe in oxygen and let out carbon dioxide. Without these senses hunting for food would be impossible. Their sense of smell is used for hunting, tracking and communication although mainly used for finding prey as they are able to smell their prey before seeing it. As well as smelling their prey they are able to hear up to 6 miles away in a forest area and 10 miles in an open area, this includes certain high pitch sounds humans are not able to hear. Even when the wolf is asleep its ears stand straight up so it is able to listen for prey or know when danger is near. Arctic wolves can see shapes and movements over long distances as their peripheral vision is excellent and able to detect movements of very small animals as close as 10
