Antonin Scalia was the first Italian American to be nominated as a Supreme Court Justice by the Reagan administration June 24, 1986. When Scalia's nomination took place in early August, Scalia was often criticized by many individuals who held positions in politics. Various individuals were unsure of Scalia fulfilling the job as a United States Supreme Court Justice. There were many speculations that viewed Scalia as an extreme conservative or couldn't make a proper decision. For example, Senator Edward M. Kennedy a Democrat from Massachusetts asked Scalia how he felt about the ruling of 1973 legalization of abortions. Scalia refused to respond, although he criticized the ruling of the situation. Kennedy responded to Scalia by suggesting President Regan only nominated him because of his opposing feelings toward abortion. Scalia responded to Kennedy’s suggestion by saying “I assure you I…show more content… On many occasions Scalia avoided sharing his thoughts on the different legal issues. Scalia avoided answering several legal discussions because he believed it would hurt his chances of possibly winning the seat as a Supreme Court Justice. Although, the individuals who questioned Scalia wanted him to interpret segments from his books. Scalia refused to answer and interpret any of his writings. This made political leaders unsure of whether to consider Scalia or not. However, even though senators advised Scalia that his thoughts won’t hurt his chances of obtaining the position of a Supreme Court Justice. Scalia shared that he has “high regard’ for the First Amendment, saying that individuals often get criticized by the press for sharing their thoughts. He shared this thought after Senator Dennis DeConcini a Democrat from Arizona agreed to vote for him even though Scalia refused to respond to his question on the Fourteenth
