Anna Hope Hudson (1869-1957), also known as Nan Hudson, was an American-born artist who lived and worked in France and England. She began her studies in Paris where she met Ethel Sands, who would become her life partner. Both were women of independent means after inheriting significant legacies following their parents’ deaths, and they divided their time between France and England, where they entertained artists and writers. Hudson’s work caught the attention of Walter Sickert when a painting of hers was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1906. He invited her to join the Fitzroy Street Group, and in 1913 it merged with the male-only Camden Town Group, forming the London group, of which Sands and Hudson were founding members. Hudson’s
