2. The ending is ironic because Mathilde went through so much work and money to buy Jeanne a necklace like her’s to replace the one she lost and in the end, it was fake. Mathilde spent thirty-six thousand francs when the necklace and it would have only costed five hundred francs. This is why the ending of the story is ironic.
3. I think the author is painting Mathilde life very unsympathetic. I think this because at the beginning of the story you find out she is living a very poor life. Then towards the middle you find out that the diamond necklace she was borrowing went missing. Then lastly at the end of the story you find out she bought a necklace that costed thirty-six thousand francs, gave it to her friend to replace the one she lost, and find out the one she lost was fake and only worth five hundred francs. So I say the author is definitely not…show more content… For example, if Mathilde told the story then her husband told the story things would be different depending on how they see the story. Just like at the beginning Mathilde said she has nothing to wear to the party. Her husband suggested one of the dresses she had and Mathilde said that they were not good enough. Even in this situation if each person told it they would probably tell it differently.
5.I think the tone of the story is depressed. I think that the tone is depressed because you can only see the story through Mathilde’s eyes. In a lot of the story she gives of a type of depressed feeling due to what happens to her in the story. For example, in the beginning of the story she feels kind of depressed because she is poor. Then she is depressed because she must pay dept for ten years. Since we can only see the story through her eyes we feel how she feels. This is why I think the tone is affected by third person
