Analysis Essay Most poetry tends to be significantly shorter than most prose pieces usually in order to try and convey complicated ideas in a shorter amount of space, such is the same with Ferris’ “Poems with Disabilities.” What makes his poem slightly different however, is that shortness itself is a reflection of the primary topic. Ferris in his attempt to explain how disabled people feel utilizes unusual line breaks, common language he hears when talking about disabilities, and language that reflects an internal monologue, as a means of making the case both for and against handicapped parking spaces. While that statement may seem contradictory, it is a way of trying to explain how the author has a lack of certainty about a relatively simple issue.…show more content…
The whole poem is self referential, but especially when he says that, “they’ll look just like a regular poem” (Ferris 16). As the poem starts its line breaks and line length remain consistent and familiar, but as the poem begins to talk about death, and heart problems the structure of the poem reflects accordingly. In this section when you realize that Ferris is talking about non readily visible disabilities. This poem intends to reflect the fact that government issued handicapped permits, can be issued to anyone with a disability regardless of being readily apparent. The internal monologue of disabled person and how they feel singled out by handicapped parking spots, is not just a reflection of disabled persons, it in a more abstract sense, is a disabled person. The poem utilizes a breakdown in conventional stanzas to single itself out in order to make a point about how a small change can dramatically affect how one feels about other people's perception of
