“There are no secrets that time does not reveal,” as said by Jean Rachine. But where do we decide what secrets to keep and what to reveal if it is all inevitable that they come out with time? Or does time decide when the secrets we keep come out? In the song, “Secrets” by OneRepublic, the band has written a song that summarizes all of these thoughts into one cohesive work of art. The speaker of the song is saying that the secrets they keep are weighing them down and it is time for them to move onto something bigger and better. The weight of the secrets they keep are finally being let go in something that they can confess. The whole song is about letting go of the past and moving onto something better. For example, in verse 4 the speaker…show more content…
One reason why I think this is for the reason in verse 13 where the speaker says, “So I’m gonna give all my secrets away...” Then in the very next line (14), the speaker says, “This time don’t need another perfect lie...” At this point in the song, it is easy for us to read into these lyrics, by starting to see that the secrets the speaker has been keeping from the people in his/her life are holding them back entirely and the speaker is ready to let that go completely. Even though, we may not all admit to having such “secrets,” most of us can relate to the lyrics and the meaning behind this song. That’s what makes this song so beautiful to me. Not only does it have a great rhythm and beat, but to add to that, it has incredible lyrics that speak right to me and hopefully others too. Verse 50 wraps up the song and what the speaker is trying to accomplish. It says, “I’m gonna give all my secrets away...” In the final analysis of things, that is the entire point of the song; letting go of the past secrets that weigh us down. OneRepublic is trying to tell us that it’s okay to let them go. Be free. Be human again. Furthermore, another quote that relates back to this song perfectly is a quote said by Mary Manin Morrissey that goes, “Even though you may want to move forward with your life, you may have one foot on the brakes. In order to be free, we must learn how to let go. Release the hurt. Release the fear, Refuse to entertain the old pain, sorrow, and regret. The energy it takes for you to hang onto your past is holding you back from a new life. What is it that you would let go of today?” The point of this quote is just to restate the fact that the secrets we keep are just burdens that we don’t need to have. Releasing the secrets we can, right now, at this moment,
