Synthesis Essay “Chicken Hips” or “Love or Hate Yourself” The “Chicken Hips” and the article “Love or Hate Yourself” both have similarities that talk about women’s self image. They explain their views on how women are treated in society now and how an ideal image is engraved in girls’ minds. Although both pieces or writing have the same train of thought, the authors have a different approach to the topic. The article “Love or Hate Yourself” by Laurie Essig expresses her words in the most positive manner and gives off the most truthful and positive message. An ideal image is implanted in the minds of a women and standards have gone up. Women constantly judge themselves and compare them to advertisements that characterize women to look like a goddess. There are far more important topics to worry and spiel about. All women are different so there are several forms of beauty and people need to see the bigger picture. Laurie Essig wrote a great statement supporting the idea such as, “Rather than telling women that they are in fact beautiful… more revolutionary to say beauty, real or otherwise, just isn’t as valuable” which tells the readers the truth. Why do others sugar coat the idea of “beauty isn’t as valuable?” It isn’t stating the fact that women are ugly, it states that beauty shouldn’t be a priority. Another strong statement made by Laurie was, “… isn’t as valuable as other forms of capitals, like educational capital… sorts of goodness.” Women’s education should be far more prioritized than beauty. In “Chicken Hips” the Gambian women was fattening people who were thin and they always celebrated and showed off they bodies. They never touched base on other importance of being women other than their shape and size. Building the new generation with education rather than advertisements is what will change the society’s
