“Under the Influence” is Scott Russell Sanders examination of his youth under the influence of his father’s alcoholism, and how this influence has not only affected Sanders and his family, but also how it is gonna affect his own children as well. Sanders relates his writing to his past, as he expressed himself in his own writing as this may have been his only way to come with terms due to the alcoholism environment created in their home. Sanders describes his father as “playful, competent, and kind when sober” due to a couple drinks of alcohol he becomes “a stranger, as fearful as any graveyard lunatic”. The alcoholic environment created in their family caused fear, and have changed the thoughts of Sanders family, as his brother became “rebellious”,
