In the article, “Literacies of Distinction: (Dis)Empowerment in Social Movement”, Holland and Debra, who are professors at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, assert that literacy practices should be scrutinized for their segregation effects and their power to free worlds. The authors used women’s activism in Nepal as an example of how social movements lead to a split between women who were considered “literate” and those who were illiterate. According Holland and Debra, the Tij festival “is a part of four-day ritual complex in which women fast and worship to show their devotion to their husbands” (p. 851).
