Amber Hagerman was last seen riding her bike outside of her home in Arlington, Texas on January 13, 1996. The nine year old girl was never to be seen by her friends and family again. Today, “America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response”, otherwise known as an AMBER alert would be issued in hopes of finding this child. All parents worry about the safety of their children, but, sometimes children wander off out of their parents sight. Usually, they return on their own, safe and unharmed. But at that moment of disappearance, parent's must deal with their worst fear, a possible missing child. In Canada a child is abducted almost every 48hrs. In statistics taken by the Canadian government “Of the 2,064 children who were the focus of Amber Alerts, between 2005 and 2012 in Canada, 394 were returned home safely.” Two thousand and thirty of the children in these stats were falsely reported missing. Sixteen year old Hannah Anderson was abducted after school by James Lee DiMaggio on August 3, 2013. It was later revealed Anderson knew her abductor as he was a friend of the family. DiMaggio killed Hannah’s mother Christina and brother Ethan after Hannah had left for school that day. When Hannah and Ethan were reported missing on August 4, 2013, a statewide AMBER Alert was issued. The first alert was sent out to all cellphones in California. The manhunt spanned from British Columbia to parts of Mexico. A week later in Idaho Hannah was found alive thanks to many witnesses calling in after receiving the AMBER alert. This is just one example of many successful cases. Though the system has been effective, there are inefficiencies such as varying age limits and false reporting to police. False reporting can clog up the system and leave possible high danger situations jumbled in a mess of minor
