For example, say a company has a successful bus route from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Then, a different company decides to build a high-speed rail line between those two cities. Once the high-speed rail line is completed, many passengers switch to rail transportation and start ditch ground transportation in favor for the quicker, and only slightly more expensive rail transportation. Since less passengers used ground transportation, in favor for the quicker rail line, the bus company would then have to lower the amount of daily bus departures as result of the decreasing amount in passenger travel. By lowering the amount of daily departures, the bus company would have to lay off some jobs since they do not need as much people to work anymore. Same would go for the airline industry. The airline would have to lower the amount of daily flights between those two cities as people will choose the, as quick but cheaper, high-speed rail
