In the beginning of the novel, Alyss is characterized as being curious, scared, and too trusting. Beddor provides one example in the book of her being trusting by saying: “...a deep rumbling shook the palace, goblets and chandeliers trembled, and the kitten began a gruesome transformation…” (Beddor 39). She grew up inside a palace with no knowledge of the gruesome outside world. Because of this she is more trusting of others.
