We are all consumers whether we like it or not. Most of us choose to ignore the fact that we succumb to marketing ploys daily. I am for one do, I like to believe that I am better than that, and that advertisement has no sway over my purchasing decisions. However truth be told it does. I myself am a huge consumer of media, I buy lots of games and lots of movies. I have games and movies in the hundreds (it is actually quite a problem). I found myself last week buying two blu-rays before I went to bed as a sort of ritual. I needed to know if they were on special and for some reason I needed to buy them then and there and not do it in the morning. It is due to the nature of our economy, there is no such thing as a simple exchange of goods and services or a natural economy (Clark, 2003) everything westerns do revolves around consumption. When I go to work, I work for an employer who pays me for my services, to which I spend my money on other goods and services I want or need. This idea applies to all westerners, and is not dependant on wealth, power or influence. It is because of this that I believe we are considered a consumer society. To imagine a society which isn't primarily as consumption-based as our society, I would have to think of a society based around either a feudalist or communist society. But even at core of these system they are still consumption based. It's just in a feudalist society your social rank dictates who you are and what you do. You have less freedom but you are still performing a good services in exchange for something else such as food, water and shelter. While communism may boast equality when it comes down to it, it is still pretty heavily consumer based, just everyone is on more equal ground than in a capitalist society as everyone receives an equal share of daily needs regardless of profession. Frankly the only non-consumer based society I can think of is one where the exchange of goods and services don't take place, where it is every man for himself. Where our technology is back in the Stone Age, and nobody helps or shares anything with anyone else besides
