The goals of interest-based instruction are to help students realize that there is a match between school and their own desire to learn and use skills or ideas familiar to students as a bridge to the new ideas or skills. Finally, focusing on students’ interest is for enhancing students’ motivation to learn (Tomlinson, 2001, p.53). Therefore, teachers, as educators, need to allow students to do something they love. Activities and discussions that are built around students’ concern and their life experiences allow the curriculum to be more meaningful to students (MacGillivray and Rueda, 2001). As it is “an individualized method of meeting all of the students’ academic needs at their level (Servilio, 2009, p.7), the biggest advantage to differentiated instruction is that it connects with all students and provides a number of options for students to understand and achieve the lesson. This can be done based on the characteristics of differentiated instruction mentioned by Tomlinson (2001) earlier in including students’ readiness, interest and learning profile. Therefore, teachers can know each student’s learning styles, or profiles to plan suitable activities that students want to do most. In fact, when teachers present the lesson and don't cater to the individual needs of each student, many children become lost in the lesson or even they can learn but it is not what they need. This can be especially damaging to the subject of English, as each knowledge and skill build on another. With differentiated learning, students are able to practice and perfect the language in a way that they are willing to do. They won't fall behind, yet they will have the necessary confidence to continue building on their skills. Differentiated instruction allows them to learn at their own abilities and strengths, thus making the content more “student-friendly”. This will help motivate your students’ by allowing them to demonstrate what they have learned while using their own talents with regard to their interests. They are allowed to make choices in the manner in which they learn as they find the best way to understand a concept without limiting the material they are expected to learn. One of the strongest assets of this approach is that students’ can be engaged at their ability level with the appropriate learning style that meets their needs, which is an extremely important factor in learning. Bess and Brandt (2001, p.52) stated “two powerful and related motivators for engagement are student’s interest and student’s choice”. This can be true that once students are excited about a specific topic, they are more eager to participate in learning. Likewise, because they can choose what they want, they will accomplish it with eagerness.
