Adult learners generally are living on their own, paying their own bills, working a 40 hour week, and they also usually have at least a child. So it’s safe to assume that they have different needs such as evening college courses or online courses both of which OCU provide. Malcolm Knowles knew there were different needs because adult’s learners are a different breed of people. So in 1984, Knowles comprised this theory: Knowles’ 5 assumptions of Adult Learners 1.) Self-concept-the older we get the more we are able to direct ourselves and don’t need others to hover over us in order to get the job completed and peer pressure is not a big of a deal as when we were younger. 2.) Adult Learner Experience-with increasing age also comes more life experiences which can be used in a positive way when learning. The phrase: been there, done that comes…show more content…
4.) Orientation to Learning- instead of being as carefree as we were while younger, we now have a sense of urgency to get the job done….correctly. 5.) Motivation to Learning-because as an adult learner we have mortgages, car payments, and our children’s college funds to think about we are more motivated to learn as much as possible in order to get a better paying job. In 1984 David A. Kolb created the: Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, it consists of four different learning styles they are as follows: 1.) Diverging (feels and watches)-people that learn this way this prefer to read, and gather their own information as well as figure out their own problems. 2.) Assimilating (watches and thinks) these people need facts and sound proven theories in order to learn. 3.) Converging (doing and thinking) these people are able to do their specific jobs that they are trained to do and to solve problems that relate to jobs. 4.) Accommodating (doing and feeling) these people are hands on and rely a lot on their gut
