Acetaminophen is an OTC pain reliever/fever reducer frequently used by humans. It has alternate names such as Tylenol, Paracetamol, and APAP. While safe for human use, at least in normal doses, it has a narrow margin of safety in both cats and dogs. Cats are more apt to have severe reactions to Acetaminophen due to and altered liver metabolism, causing a decreased ability to metabolize Acetaminophen. In cats, lethargy, swelling of the face or paws, difficulty breathing, brown or blue gums, vomiting, and lack of appetite are common observable signs of Acetaminophen poisoning.
