Not everybody deals with death the same way. Emily Grierson, a young woman, has just lost her father. Emily falls in love with a man named Homer, and her love for him comes with deadly consequences. In “A Rose for Emily”, William Faulkner uses point of view and story structure to express his feelings of pity towards Miss Emily. The story opens with Miss Emily dealing with her father’s death in an unusual way. Faulkner states,” She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days, with the ministers calling on her, and the doctors, trying to persuade her to let them dispose of the body,” showing how Emily refused to admit that her father had died, and that she would not get rid of his body. The passage,”When her father died, it got about that the house was left to her; and in a way people were glad. At last they could pity Miss Emily,”…show more content…
The quote,” So when she got to be thirty and was still single, we were not pleased exactly, but vindicated; even with insanity in the family she wouldn’t have turned down all her chances if they had really materialized,” elucidates how the townspeople felt exonerated when Miss Emily was still thirty and single. Next, Emily started seeing a man named Homer. The two would be seen riding together in a yellow-wheeled buggy on Sunday afternoons. This only increases the pity that the townspeople have for Emily. They felt as if she had forgotten her values, and she was dating a guy beneath her class. Afterwards, Emily goes to the drug store to purchase some arsenic, and this raises the suspicions of the townspeople. Everybody thought that it would be the best thing if Miss Emily were to kill herself. A woman called Emily’s cousins from Alabama to come stay with her so they could watch over her. In addition to her cousins coming to town, Homer had not been seen. Homer was last seen going to Miss Emily’s house, but he did not come
