1. How did General Douglas MacArthur react to the events in Korea? What was his stance on the Korean War?
When General MacArthur heard of the North Korean invasion of South Korea, he, by President Truman’s orders, took command of the UN forces stationed in South Korea. The North Korean army had pushed the South Korean army and UN military forces past the South Korean capital of Seoul to the peninsula of Pusan, so General MacArthur, along with his forces made a surprise attack on the North Koreans at the city of Inchon. There, they were able to drive the North Korean army southward toward Pusan where the South Korean army and UN military forces started to take the fight to the North Korean forces stationed at Pusan, gradually driving them north toward General MacArthur and his forces. The North Korean army was caught in a wedge between the two armies. And knowing that they were outnumbered, half of the North Korean army surrendered, while the half retreated back into North Korea. This allowed General MacArthur and the UN forces, as well as the South Korean army, to push deep into North Korean territory.
