This week’s topic was about symbolism. Symbolism is the artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind. That is the textbook answer to this definition. My definition is the way an author uses small objects or ideas in the story to help understand the characters, plot, and other important parts of the story. This week’s stories were wonderful short stories called “Young Goodman Brown,” “Metamorphosis,” and “Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?” All of these writings contained small bits of symbolism. Starting with “Young Goodman Brown,” I am going to talk about each story and how they showed symbolism. “Young Goodman Brown” is about a man who leaves his wife for something that isn’t said in the book. Only that it is evil. In the woods he meets a man with a snake cane. He takes him on a devilish exploit that showed the sin in everyone of his town. When he sees his beautiful, pure wife as a wicked person, he wakes up. In the end, Goodman Brown does not trust anyone in the town or even truly love his wife anymore. He dies an unhappy man.…show more content… Where Have You Been?” This talks about a girl who does her own thing. Her mom isn’t happy with her and wants her to be more like her responsible sister. She meets a guy in a gold convertible and eats dinner with him. After a while the man shows up at her house and tells her to get in the vehicle. She keeps saying no but eventually she gives in. I think there are a lot of symbolic gestures in the story. For instance, Mr. Friend seems to be an evil person with bad ideas for her. He is symbolizing the devil, persuading Connie to do the wrong thing. Eventually, like most people, she gave in to the bad man’s wishes. His car symbolizes the personality of Arnold Friend. It was eccentric and a little crazy looking. However, in the end of the story, it starts to look more dark and
