Throughout the book Inferno animal symbolism is portrayed. Inferno deals with animal imagery for the sinners because of the difficulties that one will face in hell. In additions, the sinner struggles are related to the struggles that animals go through in the real world. The different types of animals that are described in the book relates to the punishment of the sinners. Animals can be a way to describe sinners and describe animal’s thoughts and actions. In the real world people have struggles and things they are ashamed of doing. Even though Dante’s Inferno describes the sinners of hell, it also reveals that Dante is worried about the real world. The leopard represents fraud, the lion representing violence, and she-wolf represents greed and desire. These three creatures approach Dante as he is about to start his journey. I think the animals approaching him so early on portrays that there was meaning and reasons why he meet them. This could mean that Dante committed fraud or violence and was avarice about it. The most real world example is symbolism of the she-wolf. Dante had a connection with Beatrice. Their relationship however, could possibly put Dante in hell since they are immoral sinners in hell. The sinners are stuck in a frozen lake and they sometimes attempt to escape. However, this never goes well because if they are caught trying to escape they are brutally punished. In relation to frogs they sit in a pond and try to escape, but never really do because that is their natural habitat. Another example of animal imagery is the use of animal imagery is shown immensely in the fourth and fifth circles of hells. This is where greedy and angry people go for their sins. Putus who is identified as an infuriated world crosses path with Dante and Vigil. Virgil says to Plutus that you should be silence, cursed wolf and that the wold should control its own anger. This quote demonstrates how wolves are usually self-indulgence and greedy and can be ferociousness angry animals just like how Plutus
