Satire has been a way to express one’s opinions of events, people, and places since the ancient Egyptians. Ridicule is the basis of satire and appears in pop culture with shows like Saturday Night Live and media outlets like The Onion. Satire is a writing style which uses of rhetorical devices to ridicule social trends, politics, and organizations.
Satire is a way many authors address aspects of society that they believe need to be changed. The Onion’s article “Teenage Girl Blossoms Into Beautiful Object,” discusses the “amazing” transformation of seventeen year old Ashley Parker into a beautiful object from a smart, creative young girl ("Teenage Girl Blossoming Into Beautiful Object."). This article comments on how society objectives woman, seeing them more as objects than people. Fey and Poehler take quotes from Palin, and use them to make her seem unintelligent, ditzy, and like she has no real place in politics. This skit is an example of satire because it presents Palin in an unflattering way, through the use of humor and quotes, while the making a political stance.
Satire not only addresses issues in society but also organizations. The Onion’s article “NRA Calls for Teachers To…” says that the NRA encouraged teachers to point loaded guns at students after a student murdered a teacher in Nevada in 2013 (). The article pokes fun at how extreme the NRA has been about keeping their guns, despite the increase of mass shootings in America, by describing a ridiculous scenario.
