“Uncovering The True Meaning” In the story “The Lottery”, Shirley Jackson goes into a lot of detail in the beginning of the story almost as a setup for the horrific ending. Jackson starts of by telling us the date of the lottery, the morning of June 27, it was clear and sunny. Also the temperature is fresh and warm, and its a full on summer day. The time was around ten-oclock. As shirley goes into all of this amazing detail, she is slowly building us up for the ending that is quite horrific. As the story opens into a clear sunny day, the townspeople start to gather in the square. They gather here every year as the have done every year in the past for 50 years. “All of the little boys start to gather stones and put them in the middle of the square” (Jackson1). No one is allowed to open their papers until everyone has drawn from the box . “As the townspeople stand ready to open the papers each one is praying that they won't be the winner of this years lottery” (Jackson 2). They are basically holding their life in their hands on a little piece of white paper. The moment itself is very suspenseful because not only does the reader not know what will happen next but also the characters in the story not know what will happen. As Mr. summers gives the word for the papers to be opened, A look of horror spreads over Tessies face. Her beloved husband stood with the black dot on his paper! Tessie begins to Beg that hey get another chance because they weren't given a fair chance.” Finally summers gives in and their whole family gets another chance to redraw” (Jackson 2).
