In the novel of Midnight Rising and the Raid that sparked the Civil War, Tony Horwitz reached the achievement of graduate school of Journalism at Brown and Columbia University. Horwitz spent numerous years as an international newspaper reporter, covering war and conflict affairs. The main concept of the novel Midnight Rising, establishes the Abolitionist life story of John Brown. Brown desired to change the nation’s perspective on the concept of slavery. In the novel it states, “..blacks were not only desperate for freedom but ready and able to fight. All they needed was a spark (Horwitz, 2011, p.113). Horwitz uses primary sources as well as secondary sources, from diaries and journals to statements and testimonies; therefore these sources can be considered appropriate for Horwitz monograph. One historiography work that has been presented is The Liberator, which has been established by William Lloyd Garrison, this can contrast with the Declaration of Independence, and because it’s revealing how the Declaration of Independence failed to remain loyal to it’s stated amendments, which states, “…the threat the institution posed to freedom of speech and the entire nation’s liberty” (Horwitz, 2011, p.23). Another historiography that obtains support Horwitz’s argument of Brown, the Gettysburg Address, published by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which states, “...Hailed Brown’s speech as one of the finest in history...” (Horwitz, 2011, p.215).
