Tom goes out on the ledge in order to retrieve the yellow sheet of paper that flew out the window. On this piece of paper, he explained how it contains his copied facts, quotations, figures, and stacks of trade publications. After Tom saw this, he went outside his window to get the paper back. Tom is reluctant to leave the yellow sheet since it incorporated all the information he spent weeks and months working on. Moreover, when Benecke went to the ledge, it demonstrates he is extremely strong minded. He is willing to risk his life just to get that paper back. Without it, he knows his idea will only be an opinion. Nevertheless, it appears Tom Benecke would have abandoned the yellow sheet, however, his goal is what drives him to go on the ledge.
