In The Shipping News by Annie Proulx, the character Quoyle is illustrated as a dark and miserable individual. Proux, throughout the text, plays with language and text structure to properly depict Quoyle’s lonely life where not even his family seems to enjoy his company. The author makes use of a list-like syntax and repulsive imagery to portray a solitary and deeply troubled character, who suffers through life as a gloomy human being. In the passage, a list-like syntax is implemented in various occassions when describing Quoyle’s life. For instance, Proulx talks about Quoyle’s “jobs: [as a] distributor of vending machine candy, all-night clerk in a convenience store, a third-rate newspaper man,” and not only that, Proulx also lists Quoyle’s
