Compare and Contrast, The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio
In my English course at The Ohio State University we have had the pleasure of reading the book, The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, and watching the movie. After viewing the movie I noticed that there were numerous events that were displayed differently than the book version of the story. One of the differences that I noticed was the omission of particular parts of the storyline in the movie versions. I think one of the biggest differences is how the movie portrayed Kelly Ryan, versus the book portrayal of Mr. Ryan. I believe the book version of the story was most likely a more honest representation of Mr. Ryan. Due to the fast the author Terry was the daughter she lived through…show more content… Ryan was depicted to be a heartless, uncaring, uninvolved alcoholic. In the book version I do not sense the feeling of any remorse coming from Mr. Ryan. In the book it tells about Kelly becoming violently drunk and verbally abusive to his wife and children, (Ryan ). However in the movie version you see his drunken state, and hear his verbal assaults. Fortunately with this, you also see and feel his sense of remorse. In the movie version you see him actually cry when he grabbed Evelyn, causing her to fall, spill the milk and become injured. In the book version he……………………………………….
I believe some of my interpretation maybe from viewing his body language and his tone in his voice. In the book version since I am only reading, I am unable to incorporate some of these emotions. The second part that I also noticed was omission of certain parts of the story line. In the movie version Mr. Kelly doesn’t become ill with a stress condition, nor does it show him being admitted into the hospital. I feel this portion of the story line is very important. This incident shows how Evelyn continues to devote herself to him even after he has been abusive to her. In the book version this event is what makes Mr. Ryan decided to decrease his drinking habits and for a moment it allowed some sense of relief.
