In “Birthday Party” by Katherine Brush, the author utilizes the objective tone of a third-person point of view, irony, and imagery. These elements achieve Brush’s purpose that everything is not as simple as its outward appearance. Initially, the story is told in a limited, third-person voice. Then, in the last paragraph the author uses the second person (“you”) and first person (“I”). This shift in point of view punctuates the change in mood. “You looked at him and you saw this…”, you yourself as the reader are being called to notice how the “Occasion” has taken an unhappy turn.
