Some people argue that the likelihood of obedience depends on the situation and environment. Diana Baumrind, a psychologist at the University of California, examines this in her article “Review of Stanley Milgram’s Experiment.” Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton also cover this in their article “The My Lai Massacre.” Lee Ross and Richard E. Nisbett discuss this in their article “The Power of Situations.” Baumrind writes about her issues with Milgram’s experiment, specifically the way he treated the subjects during the experiment. She also states that the situation and environment are important factors in obedience (Baumrind 90-94). Kelman and Hamilton discuss the My Lai Massacre and how it was handled (Kelman and Hamilton 131-137). They also discuss what could have caused the massacre to happen (Kelman and Hamilton137-142). At the beginning he is late to a meeting and does not respect Galloway even though she is of higher rank. Baumrind would state that this is because he is in a very different environment and situation compared to Dawson and Downey (Baumrind 90). He is still in the United States while they are on the front lines next to an enemy. The pressure to follow orders is greater when your life is in danger. His disobedience could be allowed due to him being the son of a well-respected Navy Lawyer. White would support this because he uses a story of a young Marine that had trouble adjusting to life outside of the base when he was away from base (White). Ross and Nisbett would support Baumrind. They would mention that people are affected by many factors in the situation. Only ten percent of the people helped the person in the experiment when they were in a hurry while sixty-three percent helped when they were not in a hurry (Ross and Nisbett 149).
