The unabridged version or complete version of The Glorious Whitewasher not only improves the abridged version but it also weakens it. The unabridged version differs in that it concerns itself with the proper speech of children during the 1840’s along the Mississippi River, it has an entire discussion between Tom and another character named Jim and it contains more description. These differences not only improve the abridged version by giving the reader more insight to the story and time period but it also weakens it for the abridged version does not contain these differences that the author thought vital in telling the story. Furthermore, the unabridged version contains a discussion that takes place between Tom and Jim that describes in more detail the chore of bringing water from town and how Tom is jealous of Jim cause at this point in time bringing water from town seems to have more freedom and adventure than whitewashing a fence until Aunt Polly catches wind of the discussion and literally shoes Jim along. Which leads us to the unabridged version containing more description than the abridged version. The unabridged version gives us more details on the following: bringing water from town, Aunt Polly’s character, and finally the discovery of Tom’s strategies to get other children to do the work for him. In the unabridged version we learn that Aunt Polly is determined to make sure Tom learns from his mistake and completes his task of
