General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose Statement: After listening to my speech, my audience will know what MLD is, the 3 forms it contains, and also the treatments that stabilizes this disease.
Introduction
I. What if a sister was told that their sibling, at the age of 5, could die within 2 years?
A. This is the reality for families with a member diagnosed with MLD.
B. This is a rare disease that most people do not know about that can take all your abilities away, such as; walking, talking, and etc.
II. I have seen how this disease can directly affect a sister whose sibling has MLD, because that sister is me.

A. According to Genetics Home Reference Metachromatic Leukodystrophy, the most common form of Leukodystrophy, is a rare inherited disorder characterized by the accumulation of fats called sulfates in cells. This affects cells in the nervous system that produce myelin, the substance that protects nerves. Nerve cells covered by myelin make up a tissue called white matter, and with white matter damage causes progressive deterioration of mental and motor skills.
B. The early signs and symptoms may be slightly visible, which makes this disease extremely difficult to diagnose. According to NORD which is the National Organization for Rare Disorders some of the earliest symptoms are disturbances in vision, numbness in the body, memory, and posture.
C. According to MLD Foundation, it is estimated that the carrier defect occurs in the general population at 1 in every 100 people, however; the affected birth rate is 1: 40,000 - thus how MLD gets its designation of being a rare disease.
Transition: Now that you know what MLD is and what it stands for, lets talk about the 3 forms that it comes in.
II. There are 3 forms of MLD: infantile, juvenile, and
