The pacific coast cultures lived off the land and ocean that gave them a very reliable food supply that would allow them to stay as hunters and gathers for hundreds of years. California’s envirnoment supported the native people to be similar in character, form, and function. California in the 1500’s included, “Five hundred separate tribes speaking some ninety languages, each with local dialects” (Roark 11). One of the cultures in California was the Chumash culture, which resided in the area of what is now Santa Barbara. The Chumash culture had a bountiful amount of food resources, which allowed the establishment of some what permeant villages. One of the Chumash’s main food resource was acorns.
