First-person narrative can make a stronger emotional attachment with readers; thus the reader connects easier. It is their voice, thoughts and feelings being portrayed, therefore, this is the person the reader is most likely to bond with. This first-person style of narration establishes a more personal connection between the reader and the narrator, who in this case is also the main character. In Edgar Allen Poe’s tale, “The Cask of Amontillado”, there is a unique perspective into the mind of a murderer. The effectiveness of this story is largely due to its first-person point of view, which allows the reader a deeper involvement into the thoughts and motivations of the Montresor. In this story you get to experience the whole time what he is thinking and why he is doing what is doing and you kind of get to know what is going to happen. In the short story you get to see the mastermind at work. I believe that this short story would not be the same without the first-person perspective. I think it is interesting being from the narrators perspective, I find it so much more fascinating because it like being behind the scenes of movie. The irony build up in a first-person narrative makes the story creepier and satisfying. Another example of the irony in this story is when Montresor is taking Fortunato down in the catacombs the reader discovers that he is seeking revenge and that Fortunato has no clue. Not only does he not know that he is doomed he also doesn’t know that Montresor is mad at him because he is drunk. Montresor took advantage of this situation is what makes him such a villan in this story. If this story weren’t written in first person you wouldn’t have been able to see the Irony, the actions or the thoughts of the killer. This perspective shows his narration of events but does not justify in the audiences eyes, but it does offer a unique opportunity to view the dangerous killer.
